UFRaw 0.22

The Digital Dark Room

You don't own a photo camera (tablets, phablets, and phones don't count)? Then you don't need this program. Do you own a digital camera? You probably don't need this program. Do you hold a DSLR camera? You probably don't need this app either.

UFRaw

UFRaw is a raw image file editor. A raw image file is something that lies hidden from the typical consumer/user. When a camera shoots a digital photo, the resulting data is not something that you can immediately open in an image viewer. The raw file contains only the data out of which a software program can compose a viewable image, such as a Jpeg, a TIFF or a Bitmap. Digital cameras usually already have this kind of software embedded in them. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to see your photos on the camera's view screen. However, for an experienced digital photographer it is much better to access the RAW file than the resulting image if he or she wants to edit it.

Because there is no such thing as a raw image file standard, there are many formats of raw files. Luckily, UFRaw can open a bazillion types, so there's no problem if your raws come from a Cannon, a Pentax, a Minolta, or something else.

Once you've opened a raw file in UFRaw, you have many general editing and adjustment tools at your disposal. However, these will not just change pixel attributes but will modify the data layers that are included in the raw. In this respect, you also get to edit metadata info, such as camera model and lens, focal distance, the "F" attribute and more.

Tools are grouped into tabs. Overall, you have White balance and interpolation profiles, grayscale profiles, color curve and saturation graph controls, and transform tools for aspect ratio, cropping, rotating, and shrinking.

The interface also includes a raw color histogram at the top of the tool panel and a live histogram at the bottom, which reflects all of the pending changes. It's important to note that every tool has a "revert to raw" button. This form of reverting actions is in some ways more versatile than the classic Undo stack because it allows you to cancel older changes without altering newer ones.

Finally, UFRaw can export the raw image into either TIFF, PPM, PNG, or JPEG, also applying compression and including EXIF data.

Features

  • Can read a wide variety of raw picture formats
  • White balance, Interpolation, Color Matrix and Grayscale profiles
  • Can edit metadata
  • Editable color and lightness graph curves
  • Automatic exposure correction

Final Thoughts

If you can get hold of the raw files from a digital camera, UFRaw can be an excellent tool for applying necessary adjustments to a photo before putting it in Photoshop or the like. Still, if you have no clue about digital photography, you can yet have fun with UFRaw by taking raws of the net and making them look like LSD induced hallucinations.
